Takatori Hachizan XIII inherited a name before he inherited a kiln. We spoke with him early one morning in Fukuoka, ash still settling from the last firing, about what four centuries of an unbroken lineage actually asks of the thirteenth person carrying it.
“People assume tradition means repetition,” he said. “It means judgment, passed down.” Every bowl we sell under his name was thrown, glazed, and signed by his own hand — no assistants, no exceptions.
